School District and FDOH Highlands Work Together to Promote Healthy Activities

In a joint effort to encourage all school students to be more active and develop good health habits, the Florida Department of Health in Highlands County and the Highlands County School District are collaborating to provide equipment and supplies that can be used by teachers and students during school hours.  An example of items being provided is pedometers that will help students monitor how far they walk each day.  Also, there will be hula-hoops, jump ropes, and foam fliers provided to encourage students to be more active at play. Teachers will have several activity-based games that will help engage the students in learning, while keeping them moving at the same time.  These resources are being provided as a result of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (PHHSBG), which has so generously provided funding to encourage collaboration that promotes healthier lifestyles for children, and aligns with the Health People 2020 objectives.
