The Environmental Health Division investigates alleged nuisance complaints and initiates enforcement action against those responsible, if the complaint is found valid. Typical nuisances addressed by the Florida Department of Health in Highlands County (DOH-Highlands) include, but are not limited to:

  • Failing septic systems
  • Sewage leaks
  • The keeping of diseased animals that pose a threat to human health
  • The creation, maintenance, or causing of any condition capable of breeding flies and mosquitoes

Sanitary nuisances are defined in Section 386, Part I, Florida Statutes (F.S.).
